CMS: Building websites with a Content Management System

Design Method

Content Management Systems (CMS)

Not too long ago websites were static html files that required coding knowledge to build and maintain, however this is no longer the case. Today these static websites are being replaced by dynamic content managed websites.

This means a user can login to an administration panel and make changes to the website in an intuitive and familiar fashion. A knowledge of coding is no longer required to publish your own content online, making the web more accessible and diverse.

There are plenty of Content Management Systems (CMSs) to choose from, and finding the right one can be difficult. Some are aimed at developers, offering them the chance to play with the code; and some are designed for people with little to no computing confidence. You can find systems that are heavily complex, and others that work right out of the box, it all depends on what works for you.

At Pelling, we use several different CMSs, depending on the requirements of the client, however the two we favour are Expression Engine and WordPress. Each has their own distinct advantages, and have different ways of handling data.

Finding the time to sit down and edit content on a website can be difficult in today’s fast paced world, so being able to make changes while on the move is an attractive quality in a CMS. WordPress, for example, has an app which provides a great way of adding and editing content on the move.

Expression Engine is one of the systems aimed at developers. It allows them detailed control over all aspects of the website, both front end and back. The versatility of EE means that front end users can have the system designed specifically for their individual requirements, while maintaining a simple and intuitive interface for content generation. This is a great choice for front-end users who have a very specific requirement as well as developers who want control over every element of the website.

The scope of possibility for WordPress sites is seemingly endless. It can be utilised for simple blogs, right through to complex eCommerce websites. Its interface and administration is wonderfully simple and accessible to just about anyone, yet powerful enough that it can handle pretty much whatever you can throw at it. WordPress’ versatility and power means it is a suitable option for almost any requirement.
